O čemu govorimo kada govorimo o filantropiji

Bojana Radovanović

Bojana Radovanović’s book What Are We Talking About When We Talk About Philanthropy? is a first step in establishing philanthropic studies in the Serbian academic landscape. The book opens with a discussion of the history of the term philanthropy. On this journey through time, the author points out that although there is a certain continuity in understanding philanthropy, the meaning of this term, as well as the characteristics of the social phenomenon that is considered to be philanthropy have changed depending on the socio-political context and prevailing ideas of the time. Following this brief historical account, the book examines contemporary understandings of philanthropy by mapping the characteristics of a philanthropic act. The following section then examines why someone initiates or joins philanthropic activities. Finally, the author discusses the contributions and the negative aspects of philanthropy in order to indicate what kind of philanthropy societies need.
