Pierre Bourdieu and Politics

22 December 2020. 18:00 - 20:00

The Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, of The University of Belgrade cordially invites you to a special event commemorating the ninetieth anniversary since the birth of the world’s most cited sociologist - Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002).

This two-day conference entitled : “Horizons of Engagement: Eternalizing Bourdieu", is organised in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Studies of Rijeka, Croatia, the École Normale Supérieure of Paris, France, and the French Institute in Serbia, and will be held via Zoom on December 22nd and 23rd 2020.

The conference will open with an inaugural address by Marc Crépon (ENS Ulm) on “The Importance of Pierre Bourdieu Today” (December 22nd 10-11am GMT+1) and culminate with a round table discussion on “Bourdieu and Politics” (December 22nd 6-8pm GMT+1) with Gisèle Sapiro (CNRS, EHESS), Frédéric Lebaron (ENS Paris-Saclay), Franck Poupeau (CNRS) and Philip Golub (AUP).

The aim of the round table is to animate a rich discussion on Bourdieu’s public engagement, how he became a leading intellectual after having spent his earlier years following a professional career as a social scientist, his understanding of the public roles of intellectuals, as well as the enduring political significance of his oeuvre.

This conference will play a significant role in familiarizing the domestic and regional audiences with the work and legacy of Pierre Bourdieu by presenting his academic work alongside his public engagement.

The organizing committee

Ivica Mladenović, Zona Zarić and Milan Urošević.
