The Library was founded in 1957 as a special unit of the Department for Archiving, the mission of which was to collect and analyze domestic and international literature in the field of social sciences. Its catalogue is shared between the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory and the Institute for Social Sciences. The Library cooperates intimately with the Serbian Public Library, the University Library, the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the library of Matica Srpska, as well as the Institute for International Politics and Economics, the Institute for Comparative Law, and the libraries of the Faculties of Philosophy, Economics, and Politics.
In the fifty-five years of existence, the Library has compiled a catalogue of 136,000 volumes of local and international monographs and serial publications. The basic catalogue of the library is made u of around 65,000 titles in the form of books, reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, bibliographies), as well as journals from Serbia and the world. A special collection of some 35,000 volumes is made up of what the Library inherited after the closing of the Economics Institute of the former Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, and a gift from the Ford Foundation of comprehensive sets of specialist journals, making this library one of the richest specialist libraries in the area of social sciences. The Library has free access to many electronic library and information services, and its participation in KOBSON, the system of unified cataloguing of Serbia, allows its scientific community access to many e-books and foreign scientific journals in full text, as well as certain index databases.
The Library work hours are Monday through Friday, 10am – 2pm for fellows of both institutes.
