Orthodox Church and Gay Community


Born on the 3rd of December, 1978, in Banja Luka. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade and then continued his theological studies in Geneva and Athens. Dejan Mačković is the author of several articles and studies in the field of theology. Currently, he is employed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH.

The position of the Serbian Orthodox Church on gay rights is often very contradictory. It must be interpreted through politics and the special relation between SOC and Serbian States. At this point, the position of the Church on gay rights and culture is political and not the theological one, just because the believers do not consider gay rights as an important issue. However, the Orthodox Church has a large and very optimistic and constructive background based on Tradition which will serve as a headstone in her theological development of teaching on homosexuality. The Orthodox position on this matter will be on a vast ground between radical sexual pessimism and absolute abstinence and on the other side, egoism, consumerism and promiscuity as all other stereotypes that are generally attributed to gay culture.
