[Book talk] Slobodan Divjak – Ideologies of the Destruction of Democratic Ethnoheterogeneous Societies
🗓 12. May 🕒 12:00pm 🔹 IFDT
Slobodan Divjak’s book, published under the title Ideologies of Destruction of Democratic Ethnoheterogeneous Societies contains a collection of texts published in international journals. It also contains the polemic between Divjak and Bulgarian philosopher Plamen Makariev, as well as lecture written for the international conference “Xenophobia and New Shapes of Nationalism.” According to the author himself, the book attempts to, starting from the natural law theory, problematize the relationship between original liberalism and relevant current conceptions, as observed in multiculturalism, communitarianism, and postmodernism.
Divjak engages in a critical dialogue with adherents of the communitarian-multiculturalist conceptions: A. MacIntyre, M. Sandel, W. Kimlik, M. Walzer, C. Taylor and others. He claims that these conceptions cannot be considered as complementation and expansion of the civil state, but only its critique, moderate or radical, depending of the level of legally recognised particular rights of the ethnocultural groups.
Slobodan Divjak published until now nine books in philosophy and translated over fifty theoretical articles. He drew attention among scholars with his books The Problem of Identity: Nation, Culture, Citizenry; Antej and Ahasfer. Slobodan Divjak was editor-in-chief of the Third Programme of Radio Belgrade and its journal. He also revived International School Felix Romuliana and became its first director, while today he performs the duty of honorary director of the school.
