Second workshop: The notion of the common good – dilemmas of the commons
The Laboratory for Philanthropy, Solidarity and Care Studies – SolidCare Lab, Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory, is organizing a series of reading workshops on the common good. The second workshop entitled “The notion of the common good – dilemmas of the commons” will be held on May 5, 2022 at 12pm, in the premises of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory, Kraljice Natalije 45, 4th floor. We kindly ask you to apply by e-mail to solidcare@instifdt.bg.ac.rs.
In the second reading workshop, we will focus on the concept of commons. This term refers to cultural, material and intellectual resources, the use of which can be claimed by all members of a society. There are different and rather polarizing views on the issue of common: from more sceptical authors like Garrett Hardin who believe that this type of resource management must fail, to those authors like Elinor Ostrom and David Harvey who believe that the proliferation of this kind of goods is necessary if in the future we want to live in a sustainable and just society. The discussion will focus on the following questions: How are commons defined? What are the basic socio-economic principles of reproduction of the commons? What is the relationship between the common good, the public interest and the commons? What is the future of this type of resource?
The reading workshop is moderated by Bojana Radovanović and Srđan Prodanović.
