First workshop: The notion of the common good in a historical perspective
The Laboratory for Philanthropy, Solidarity and Care Studies – SolidCare Lab, Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory, is organizing a series of reading workshops on the common good. The first workshop entitled “The notion of the common good in historical perspective” will be held on March 22, 2022 in the premises of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory, Kraljice Natalije 45, 4th floor. We kindly ask you to apply by March 18 by e-mail to solidcare@instifdt.bg.ac.rs.
The notion of the common good refers to what is beneficial for all members of a society. The term is present in philosophy, legal, economic and political sciences, but its meaning differs among theorists, from Aristotle, Aquinas, Machiavelli, through Locke, Rousseau, Smith, Marx, Mill, to contemporary thinkers like Rawls. The discussion in the first workshop will be focused on, but not limited to, the following questions: What was considered (and is considered) a common good? How is it achieved? Are there any differences in the meaning of the notion of the common good and related concepts such as the public good and the public interest?
The reading workshop is moderated by Bojana Radovanović and Srđan Prodanović.
