The Last Act of Yugoslavia – 30th years after. What EU can learn?
December 20, 2021 at 6 p.m.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the resignation of Prime Minister Ante Markovic (December 20, 1991), which ended the existence of the last legitimate federal institution, and thus the Yugoslav state (and society) – we question the causes and consequences of this historic event. At the panel, we will discuss the last “days” of Yugoslavia, the domestic and foreign policy position of the last federal government, headed by Ante Markovic. Historical, economic and political circumstances in which Yugoslavia was transformed from a consensual and multinational community into a barrel of gunpowder whose explosion made it a global problem. What were the internal causes for such a historical defeat and how did the great powers react in that situation? The second part of the discussion would focus on current topics in the region and the experiences the EU can draw from the Yugoslav crisis.
