Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory (IFDT), in cooperation with the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), will host the 2026 ASN European Conference, “Reconfiguring National Identities amid Multiple Crises,” from 18 to 20 September 2026 in Belgrade.

The ASN European Conference returns to Belgrade after twenty years, in a markedly different political and social context from that of 2006. Wars, migration, democratic backsliding, economic and ecological crises, and new geopolitical divisions have altered the conditions in which questions of nationhood, identity, and belonging are articulated and negotiated. The conference takes these developments as a starting point for examining how national identities are being shaped, contested, and reconfigured amid multiple crises.

Over three days, more than 160 scholars affiliated with institutions across 31 countries will take part in 38 sessions, including research panels, roundtables, and book panels. The programme brings together a wide range of disciplinary, regional, and methodological perspectives, reflecting the breadth and complexity of contemporary scholarship on nationalism and identity.

Keynote lectures will be delivered by Siniša Malešević (University College Dublin) and Florian Bieber (University of Graz).

The conference is not open to the general public. Recordings of the keynote lectures and other selected programme events will be made available on IFDT’s YouTube channel following the conference.

The conference is supported in part by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, grant no. 7422, through the project “Imagining a Nation: The Contesting Serbian National Narratives (XX–XXI Century) – IMAGINATION”, and also marks the final stage of the project.
