Bešlin Milivoj
Milivoj Bešlin is a historian and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade. During the 2017–2018 academic year, he taught at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Montenegro. He is the author of the two‑volume monograph The Idea of Modern Serbia in Socialist Yugoslavia, as well as more than one hundred scholarly studies, articles, essays, and reviews published in domestic and international journals and edited volumes. He has compiled and edited seven collections of papers, participated in numerous regional and international academic conferences, and contributed to the implementation of fifteen research projects. He currently serves as the coordinator of the project Imagining the Nation: Serbian National Narratives in Dispute (20th–21st Century), funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (2024–2027). He is also the founder and coordinator of the Laboratory for the Study of Socialism and (Post)Yugoslav Studies (YugoLab) at the Institute and, since 2020, has held the position of Chair of the Institute’s Academic Council. His research encompasses a broad array of topics in the political and social history of Yugoslavia: the political system, social dynamics, modernization policies, internal reforms, and the federal structure of the Yugoslav state; contemporary historical revisionism, particularly in relation to the Second World War, the Chetnik movement, and antifascism; and the dynamics of Yugoslav federalism and inter‑republic relations, including Serbian‑Croatian relations and the question of Vojvodina’s autonomy. He has devoted particular attention to nationalism studies and to examining their impact on the dissolution of Yugoslavia, as well as to analyzing the ways in which nationalist ideologies shaped political processes, identity formation, and interethnic relations within both Yugoslav and post‑Yugoslav contexts. His work further includes methodological studies of Yugoslav historical research, with a focus on the epistemological boundaries and interpretive challenges characteristic of the postsocialist era.
