The volume speaks to both an academic audience, but also a more general readership. Current knowledge and findings on human–animal interactions from a range of social sciences and humanities disciplines are scholarly synthesized in one place. The findings are presented so that the volume provides relevant and useful information to individuals, groups, organizations, and institutions engaged in issues of animal welfare. The aim is to demonstrate the significance of this topic to the general public by clarifying links between human and animal well-being, and showing that animal welfare is, in fact, a matter of public interest. This volume is the result of collaboration with the SENTIENCE research group at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory.
