For Paolo Virno and Antonio Gramsci there is no fundamental rupture between theoretical contemplation and active participation in events, both operating from the premise of unity of theory and practice. Thus, thinking or imagining the revolution for them is engaged reflection, which does not exclude from the concrete and active engagement, nor from historical reality, but rather intervenes within it. This presents a theoretical stance towards practice that suspends the distance of the Kantian observer-knower, continuously struggling with its contradictory return.
