Research abstract
Due to the very rapid development of society and technology, the discourse on ethical issues is becoming more and more relevant. On the one hand, there is a discussion in the scientific community about the application of artificial intelligence (AI), while on the other hand there is a gap when it comes to public attitudes about this use. In order to implement artificial intelligence as successfully as possible, in addition to the relevant views of researchers, ethicists and lawyers, it is necessary to take into account the knowledge and views of people on these issues. In the Republic of Serbia, research of this type has not been carried out, so there is a gap which this project aims to fill. This research seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the ethical issues raised by the development of technology, digitization and artificial intelligence the among the scientific and academic community, policy makers and society as a whole as well as to raise awareness about the knowledge and attitudes of citizens in the Republic of Serbia about the use of artificial intelligence.
The project ETHICS AND AI: Ethics and Public Attitudes on the Use of Artificial Intelligence contains a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the study of ethical challenges that arise from the development and application of artificial intelligence. The practical part consists of an empirical investigation into the public attitudes regarding various aspects of the use of artificial intelligence. The research examined how various socio-demographic factors and prior knowledge about artificial intelligence influence attitudes about artificial intelligence.
The goals were (1) to examine public attitudes in Serbia towards the use of artificial intelligence; (2) to determine which factors influence these attitudes; (3) to examine whether the public shares the concerns identified by ethical philosophers engaged in the AI debate; (4) to examine the public’s prior knowledge of artificial intelligence; and (5) to examine citizens’ trust in various institutions to use artificial intelligence in the best interest of the public. The results showed that the public in Serbia has a divided opinion on the use of artificial intelligence. Half of the examinees have positive while the other half of the examinees have negative attitudes. These attitudes are influenced by variables such as the respondent’s age, education, profession, level of religiosity, and prior knowledge of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the results showed that the public is worried about the disappearance of professions due to the development of AI and discrimination by the AI system. The results indicate the need to educate the public about the challenges and the ways to overcome these challenges. It is necessary to increase transparency in the decision-making processes related to the implementation of AI and the dialogue between the public on the one hand and the state as well as the private sector on the other hand. A second focus should be on further research into the views of the public and experts on specific applications of AI and related ethical challenges.
