Research abstract

Examining unequal opportunities in education in Serbia and defining recommendations for public policy makers based on research results

The subject of the project is the examination of unequal educational opportunities in Serbia. Such an examination is important if one considers the link between education and income distribution, since the existence of unequal opportunities in education is largely reflected in unequal opportunities in future incomes. The importance of the research is reflected in the fact that this cycle of unequal opportunities in education can be repeated between generations because children of poorer parents eventually become parents themselves and pass on the described unequal opportunities in the sphere of education to their children. Moreover, the level of education can be linked to other important dimensions of society, such as the level of health or the level of participation in democratic procedures, so that inequality in educational opportunities can be reflected in gaps in other important segments of social life. Based on the findings, it is possible to define measures and guidelines for public policy makers in the domain of creating a fairer society in Serbia with a focus on increasing the availability of higher education.
