Research abstract

The research on Foreign direct investment and the quality of jobs in the Republic of Serbia is motivated by the controversies surrounding the policy of subsidizing foreign companies in the Republic of Serbia and the blurred picture of official statistics on the effects of foreign investment on the labor market. With a deeper insight into the data, it is possible to see that foreign direct investments are concentrated in a large percentage in sectors with low added value and high mobility of capital, which can be taken as an argument in support of the claim that the decrease in the unemployment rate during the last decade is to a greater extent an indicator of quantitative, rather than qualitative improvement in the labor market. The overemphasized role of foreign capital in shaping investment policy and labor market reforms can be linked to the emergence and spread of the precariat in the Republic of Serbia, reflecting the low efficiency of institutions and public policies. Observed problems on the labor market and comparative examples from successful post-transition countries suggest that the evaluation of foreign investment promotion policies in the Republic of Serbia should be done in such a way that equal attention is paid to the quality and quality of jobs.
