Stjepan Gredelj was born in Skopje in 1953. He graduated and obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. He worked at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory from 1982 until 2012. He became a Principle Fellow in 2002. He was the Institute’s acting director in 2003-2004, and later full director 2004-2010. He was the editor-in-chief of Philosophy and Society (Filozofija i društvo), 2003-2010, and assistant editor of Sociološki Pregled, 1984-1986 and 1992-1994, as well as editor-in-chief, 1987-1988. He was a member of the Anti-Corruption Council.
Gredelj was a tenacious researcher of public opinion, renowned media analyst, and an expert in the sociology of politics, political culture, social values, and of the position and role of trade unions.

He passed away in Belgrade in 2012.
