ABOUT THE BOOK
The author introduces her study on the relations between humans and other animals by questioning why humans often disregard the capacities for thinking and feeling in other animals. She highlights some potential reasons – the need to justify the exploitation of other animals, the human fear of confronting mortality, and ideological and religious motives – then proceeds to investigate empirically which factors shape participants’ attitudes. For example, how does how we categorize other animals affect our moral judgment regarding their treatment? To what extent do people perceive their companion animals as different from animals used for food? What do people know about other animals’ mental and emotional capacities?
