Change in Belgrade, June 12-15, 2024
The International Conference on Change will be held from June 12 to 15, 2024, in Belgrade, at the Rectorate building, organized by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade. The conference program includes over 100 speakers, including 11 plenary speakers.
Change is a fundamental concept in social sciences and humanities, but it is difficult to define clearly. Questions arise about what constitutes change, when it is possible, and whether it is always desirable. Although the causes of change can be obvious, its outcomes are often unpredictable due to the complexity of social systems. Small changes can trigger cascading effects throughout society, requiring a nuanced understanding of these processes. The most fruitful discussions about change occur when we view it as a result of human agency, where political movements, revolutions, and technological innovations reflect a collective drive toward changing social norms. The driver of change is social engagement and a shared understanding of societal problems.
A special event during the conference will be the conferring of honorary degrees (Doctor Honoris Causa) to three distinguished philosophers for their exceptional contributions to theoretical research and partnership with the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory: Axel Honneth, Jonathan Wolff, and Étienne Balibar.
