The lecture “The Binary and Beyond” will reflect the intersex topic throughout history, but also in different cultures.

Also, in this lecture, the term intersex itself will be determined, as well as the place of intersex in the LGBT spectrum. The relationship between trans and intersex issues will also be discussed.

The lecture will look at the most common misconceptions about people with intersex variations, as well as examples of discriminatory acts and unequal treatment of intersex folks, in legislative, and in the social sense. Finally, we will discuss the position of intersex persons in Serbia.

Kristian Ranđelović is trans and intersex activist and executive director of organization XY Spectrum in Serbia. Main areas of his work are visibility and empowerment for intersex children and their parents, psycho-social support for intersex, trans and non-binary individuals, capacity building organizations in ex-Yugoslavia region on intersex issues. He participated in International Intersex Forums and was one of authors of the Malta Declaration. He contributed with his personal story in book about life situations of intersex individuals – „Human Rights between the Sexes”. He conducted first Intersex research study in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia in 2017. He was one of authors of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) with first information about intersex existence in Serbia.

Kristian is a board member of organizations TransMentors International, Transgender Europe (TGEU) and Co-chair of Organization Intersex International Europe (OII Europe). He is also member of international advisory board in organization Astraea – Lesbian Foundation for Justice.
