[Round Table] Sociology in a Time of Crisis (CriticLab)
The goal of the round table “Sociology in a Time of Crisis” is to illuminate the position and role of sociology in the context of the global polycrisis we have been experiencing in recent years, through a conversation between domestic sociologists dedicated to the research of social movements and social change and Geoffrey Pleyers, a professor at the Catholic University of Louvain and President of the International Sociological Association. What can sociology say about the rise and consolidation, but also the contestation, undermining, and dismantling of populist, more or less authoritarian regimes whose new forms constantly emerge? What are the specificities of the sociological approach to these burning topics, as opposed to political science, economic, historical, or psychological approaches? Can it be said that sociology possesses a better understanding of social reproduction and social change, and if so, what does this superiority consist of? Furthermore, in what way does the critical edge carried by sociological research in our environment resonate with the everyday critical practices of the actors themselves, on one hand, and with global theoretical and research trends, on the other? In what way do the waves of protests, especially of younger generations, which frequently erupt in different parts of the world, pose the question of the relationship between the local and the global in a new way?
