The Transformative Power of Trans Liberation – Common Goals of Progressive Movements
🗓6 september 🕒 17:00🔹 IFDT/Online
The oppression of transgender individuals follows the patterns of homophobic, misogynistic, right-wing, and fascist oppression that we have unfortunately witnessed too many times throughout history. Arguments against recognizing the humanity of transgender individuals are often recycled recitations from reactionary movements of the past, in which only the name of the minority group targeted by that movement’s hatred is changed. Because of this, a key element in resisting fascism and, consequently, supporting the fight for trans liberation is the effort not to forget the history of anti-fascist and feminist struggle, which in the past has managed to sway public opinion against these reactionary movements.
By addressing topics such as poverty, workers’ rights, homelessness, lack of accessible healthcare, and the struggle for bodily autonomy, this lecture aims to highlight the fact that what right-wing individuals often present as “trans issues” are actually issues that affect all of us. Fascist policies that advocate for the discrimination and social, economic, and political repression of transgender individuals are harmful to society as a whole, rather than being unique to this minority. Therefore, the fight for trans liberation is a key element in building a democratic society where the rule of human rights and effective resistance against fascism are upheld.
