Zagorka Golubović was one of the founders of social anthropology in Serbia and decisively influenced the development of the study of sociology and anthropology at the University of Belgrade. Since 1981, she has worked as a scientific advisor at the Center for Philosophy and Social Theory of the Institute of Social Sciences.
The Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade has established the “Zagorka Golubović” award in her honor in 2021 which is intended for younger researchers for engaged research work. The award is given for the best text published in a scientific journal or a collection of scientific papers that approaches regional (Southeast Europe) or wider social issues in an engaged way.
Eight candidates applied for the award in 2021 for works published in 2020. The award committee reviewed all applications received and unanimously proposed Lara Končar, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade, as the laurate of the “Zagorka Golubovic” annual award for 2021 for her work entitled “On the position and experiences of seasonal workers in agriculture in modern Serbia. Can we talk about the elements of structural violence” which was published in the journal Anthropology 20, vol.3.
The committee concluded that the paper is an original high-quality scientific paper which examines the existence of structural, institutional and other forms of violence and exclusion of women in the work sphere, with a focus on the sphere of seasonal agricultural work. The author uses various theoretical frameworks that thematize the marginalization of women workers, especially in seasonal jobs, and applies them to empirical material obtained through fieldwork, as well as to the analysis of existing institutional documents, public policies and statistics. The paper deals with a current social problem, the significance of which exceeds the borders of our country, and with its focus on the practical-political conditions that enable it, it is also an invitation to think about the types of engagement that would lead to its solution. With its scientific quality, orientation towards engaged opinion and treatment of a topic of wide social significance, the work of Lara Končar responds in the best possible way to the propositions of the competition for the “Zagorka Golubović” award.
The Scientific Council of the Institute supported the proposal of the committee for awarding the prize at its meeting held on October 11, 2021 and made the final decision to confer the “Zagorka Golubović” annual award for 2021 to doctoral student Lara Končar.
