The goal of the reading workshop “Is the philosophy of science a socially engaged discipline?” is twofold.
First, our goal is to become acquainted with relatively new research areas within the philosophy of science known as science and values and science and society. More specifically, we will investigate the role of values in scientific research, the question of scientific objectivity, the tension between scientific freedom and the social responsibilities of scientists, etc.
Second, while we discuss these issues, we will have a specific question in mind i.e., is the philosophy of science a socially engaged discipline? During our last sessions, we will do a bit of metaphilosophy and discuss our assumed conceptions of what makes a philosophical discipline socially engaged. In doing so, we will critically examine whether science and values and science and society could be considered as cases of a socially engaged philosophy of science.
This reading workshop is open to students and researchers who come from different fields of philosophy and different scientific disciplines. During our first meeting, we will discuss how to organize our sessions in order to bring closer philosophy of science to those who lack background knowledge but rightly recognize the relevance of the aforementioned issues to their own research.
The deadline for application is March 31 via the attached form.
