The Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory invites all interested students of academic master’s studies, as well as all students who will enroll in this level of postgraduate studies in 2024, to take advantage of the opportunity and apply for participation in the Concepts that Matter – Debating Democracy course.
Due to their ubiquity in the media space, the words democracy and sustainable development can often seem self-evident to us. However, these terms are equally subject to political dispute, which suggests that their meaning also depends on the context in which they are used. The aim of this course is to explore this paradox together with the help of advanced methods of corpus linguistics. Course participants will gain an insight into the complex relationship between the modern understanding of democracy and sustainability. You will also learn to use the innovative method of corpus linguistics to digitally analyze large amounts of linguistic data to provide critical, evidence-based insights into contemporary political debates.
