The University of Tuzla, in collaboration with the TPO Foundation and the University Gender Resource Center (UNIGeRC) of the University of Sarajevo, is organizing a Winter School on Gender and Art. The school will take place in Tuzla from October 28 to November 2, 2024. It will feature 18 interactive lectures and workshops focused on gender and art, with topics covering literature, theater, film, music, visual and new media arts, and cultural policy. The lectures will be delivered by renowned academic instructors and artists. During the Winter School, participants will not only acquire new knowledge and engage in discussions but also have the opportunity to network and collaborate with peers from 19 universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro.
Description
The Winter School on Gender and Art is designed to provide students with insights into contemporary explorations of the complex relationship between gender and artistic practice. This intensive program is dedicated to uncovering how gender identities, roles, and expectations have historically influenced and continue to shape the production, representation, and reception of art across different cultures and time periods, as well as how artistic practice intervenes in gender representations around us. The School’s goal is to collectively analyze how gender dynamics influence artistic creation and vice versa, from the traditional exclusion of women and individuals marginalized based on gender, sex, and sexual orientation, to the rise of feminist and queer art movements that have challenged these conventions, marginalizations, and exclusions. Through lectures, participants will critically examine the contributions of artists and marginalized gender/sexual minorities both throughout history and in contemporary contexts, offering students an opportunity to view artistic production through a more inclusive and intersectional lens.
One of the key objectives of this program is to equip students with the knowledge and tools to critically analyze art from a gender-sensitive perspective. By integrating feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and queer theory with art history methods, students will explore topics such as the depiction of gendered bodies in art, the role of art in shaping societal norms about gender, and how gender influences artistic intent and audience interpretation. This interdisciplinary approach will help participants gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and political contexts that shape gender and art. The Winter School will foster critical thinking and encourage students to engage in contemporary debates on gender identity, representation, and inclusivity in the world of art. Through lectures, workshops, discussions, and practical creative projects, students will develop skills necessary for both academic research and professional practice in the field of art, such as visual literacy, critical analysis, and curatorial thinking. This program also aims to strengthen participants’ competencies in addressing issues of diversity and representation in their own creative practices or academic research through a deeper understanding of art as a powerful tool for social change, activism, and personal expression. Upon completion of the program, students will be empowered to engage more meaningfully in current discussions on gender and art and to view art through a critical lens, while also equipping them with the intellectual and practical skills needed for contemporary debates on gender, diversity, and equality in the art world and through artistic practice. This experience will encourage participants not only to analyze art in new ways but also to advocate for greater gender equality in artistic practice and processes, as well as in the social sphere as a whole.

- Regular attendance at activities throughout the Winter School,
- Active participation in lectures and discussions,
- Writing a final paper with mentorship support after the Winter School (optional).
