The main objective of this study is to map the new social movements in the Western Balkans. Although the entire region has been the scene of various and intense protest and activist initiatives – from civic plenums in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the spread and strengthening of movements like those calling for a right to the city in Croatia and Serbia, to the Colorful Revolution in Macedonia – scholarly and academic interest in these social processes is still in its infancy, with almost no comparative studies available. This study aims to address this gap by systematizing some of the insights gained by the authors through researching contemporary movements in Macedonia and Serbia – not with the ambition of offering a comprehensive whole and ready-made conclusions, but rather with the intention to raise important questions and call for further research on the topic of the democratic potential of social movements in the Western Balkans.
