The focus of this volume is Schönberg’s project of liberation from the shackles of tonality and Adorno’s reception of dodecaphonic music of this composer. The authors connect the notions of political and artistic avantgarde, from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. They see this musical self-destruction as the outcome of the avantgarde’s assault on Beethoven.
