John Harris is a British bioethicist, professor of bioethics and director of the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation at the University of Manchester. He is also one of the founders of the International Association for Bioethics and the journal Bioethics.

He was a member of the Commission on Human Genetics of Great Britain, from its establishment, in 1999, until 2010. He is the author of influential books, such as: Clones Genes and Immortality, Oxford University Press, 1998; John Harris Ed. Bioethics. Oxford Readings in Philosophy Series, Oxford University Press, 2001; Justine C. Burley and John Harris Eds. A Companion To Genethics: philosophy and the genetic revolution. Basil Blackwell, Oxford. 2002; On Cloning, Routledge. London, 2004; Enhancing Evolution, Princeton University Press 2007.
In 2006, The Independent included him in its so-called “good list” of fifty influential people “who make this world a better place.” In 2008, The Times ranked him in the “top fifty people who influence the way we eat, exercise and think about ourselves.” He advocates a liberal consequentialist approach to the issue of bioethics.
